When your self-worth depends on what you achieve
We’re obsessed with achievement, trapped in a cycle where one’s latest success measures personal worth. This fixation raises a crucial question: Have we stopped recognizing each other’s inherent value, seeing ourselves merely as products of our accomplishments?

I find this a little naïve to a degree, with my new experiences over the last few years. I've naturally trended towards the tenants of stoic philosophy, even well before I knew what it was or much less had taken a look into it. I was very happy, healthy, fit, active, loved work and people, nothing ever could upset or anger me, an athlete, etc. However, I developed chronic health issues around age 23. Progressively worsening until severe: brain fog, memory issues, fatigue and lethargy, focus and attention vanished, unable to sleep for days, senses drastically worse, amongst other things. Once your mind and attention starts to go, your inner monologue disappears and every little thing is made exhausting and difficult to do, it's difficult to adhere to any philosophy, much less anything that requires much thought in your now mostly empty head. I went from someone who loved university and was going to school for astrophysics and later biology with med school in mind, to being mindless, thoughtless and could probably have a 2nd grader run circles around me mentally and intellectually at this point. Considering my mind is mostly just empty or TV static ever since, I don't really dwell on the past, or worry about the future; however I can assure you that I'm still nonetheless very unwell mentally and physically nowadays due to the unavoidable reality that is debilitating physical and mental chronic health conditions of which my doctor still hasn't been able to figure out entirely. Stoicism and similar ways of thought and living work wonders, as long as you're still healthy enough to possess the ability to think deeply and be conscious in day to day life, however it has it's limitations.

I am afraid this video fails to show the reality. When someone asks for what you do for a living, is actually asking how you help the society, what role you have in it. Not how much money you make or how successful you are. What you do fills the needs of a part of our society. At the same time you receive and consume what others generate and provide. When someone only play video-games in a basement, their can be seen (at least currently) as someone who doesn't provide much help to society, but their rather receive the goods all the others provide, such as the food, the sofa, the computer and the game, giving then a not so good impression.

Iam 32yo. My self-worth is not existent. I feel like egenetic waste because im craving to feel love/being loved by wonderful women but im not able to make anyone want or love me. I feel like my time is running up and i will never ever be able to enjoy the wonderful feeling of being close to person you trust and like very much. I see no hope fior me because being/looking average is not enough anymore to attract any women. They go to Tinder or elsewhsere and ask self-confident for dick pics with face as application . Lonelynesscrisis , and mental health of men will kill me soon because i dont want to feel like unworthy and denied trash anymore.

How I wish I could have a conversation with you or someone of your well rounded views. I’m a middle aged, self employed carpenter in the US. I grew up on welfare, in low income housing around a lot of generational substance abuse and mental illness. I’ve been working diligently on myself, my trade skills, my ability to communicate and constantly working on my business. Yet, I have very little to show for it. I do understand that the skills I learned to survive my childhood now hold me back from succeeding in many ways. That being said I know it’s not where you are but how far you have come, but where I am is so short of what I wanted for my family and myself. It’s the level of dedication, actual physical work and investment of time and what little I have to be empty handed at this point in my life is what is heart breaking. I feel like I have failed my family and myself. Yet I wake up, every day and continue forward. So many details and specifics that can’t be put in a comment, I just really appreciate what you’re doing, I feel like I’m the only one noticing these things you talk about and thankfully can talk about them with my wife.

One thing I've been thinking of, is that we as human beings need to strive for success in order to be able to afford basic living standards. We simply need a lot of money to survive. Nowadays, most of us need to work super hard and long to be able to afford a tiny apartment and to pay the bills. If life was more affordable, we would perhaps not push ourselves as hard and be more calm with achieving less. It's just that basic things in life are not as accessible for younger people anymore. It puts a lot of pressure on younger generations to perform. We are so stuck in the rat race that we put aside other important things in life, such as having kids, etc.

emotion is the "money" of the brain, when I put emotion to remove the pink elephant, my brain will understand you want the pink elephant thought, It's exactly the same to stop being annoyed with stupid thoughts like I need to win, you are puting emotion not in " win" put " I need the others attention" and even when you win and others don't care ( because of envy) the win became a frustration. Success is a search for prestige, you don't seek success, you are seeking prestige, this is what you need to stop buying with emotion.

The great irony of people complaining about wishing not being born is that they didn’t off themselves fast enough to stop themselves from complaining about it on the internet. Jokes aside, this video is fundamentally misguided in that Jordan Peterson, like many others, never claimed ALL men and women should have children. They understand there are exceptions to rules. Peterson talks that way primarily to people who needs to hear those messages to pull themselves up and get their acts together. And let's face it, this channel, I, and a lot of people know that we are taught a lot of garbage growing up, like not having kids is a good thing because of climate change.

I don't know. I've been flat broke and everyday did what I wanted. I was depressed and had anxiety about my future. Now I work a difficult yet fulfilling job and have a ton of cash flowing in. I still live quite modestly aside from my property and a few toys. My financial future is secured and I'm able to do what I want when I'm not working. To me this truly is the way to live. I've never been happier. Hard work is good for the soul.

But in principle I would like to say, you all are, like myself, not just humans. We are the very forefront of humanity. Every second of existence of each of us, we face the uncaring dead world, beautiful in it's cold logic. We - a collection of atoms, get to choose to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the atoms. We gotta take action to continue our existence. Lol I forgot what I wanted to say. Why we ask what people work with. Tho the answer isn't always super interesting, is because we spend almost all our focus on that. Most people dont even have any hobby too talk about. So like ask most people about their private life, most people either don't want too yalk about it. Or it's kind of generic

At work there was a buzz some twenty years ago. Swimming pool in the garden and fancy car...far far away vacations... The status hunger dripped of of Facebook with the selfies in Pool, car, Bali, Mexico you get the idea. These people I knew in person weren't the smartest bulbs on the planet... They ended up in depth, divorced or very few leaving the rat race... There was a point when they started snitching on eachother because there were greater forces in play and came to play. Few were caught in illegal activities (not going into detail but it was in paper and on radio/tv). It ruined their own lives as that of others, their children a.o.. So glad that I did not budge and stuck to my plan and idea of what makes me happy. And I was not (by far) the smartest kid in class 😂

Okay, so first thing, I found this to be one of your more interesting of videos. I’ve watched and taken notes on a few of them. I find your content very helpful and it’s helped me learn valuable things. Basically: “Great video, keep it up.” Asking a person what they do when people first meet is a cultural norm in the US. I like to think that it’s primarily driven by the capitalist values that drive the culture. In some countries, they ask where you are from instead, which makes it sound like the social interaction is more connection based than on the basis of competition. Asking what a person does to find out their job/career is assessing threat to one’s ego, I think apologies if I’m repeating a previous statement). I hate how that works. Unless a person is making bank, their value as a moral person is meaningless.
